Each winter mice and other rodents invade an estimated 21 million homes. They typically enter homes between October and February to get out of the cold. Once inside, they prefer nesting close to food sources. Mice are good climbers that can jump as high as one foot in the air. Make sure to store all food items in hard glass or plastic containers with a tightly sealed lid. Cutting off food and liquid sources can make it extremely difficult for mice to survive in your home. Mice can also squeeze through small openings as small as the size of a dime. You can prevent mice entry into your home by sealing any openings on the exterior. A female mouse can have up to 12 babies every three weeks, and as many as 150 babies in a single year! Signs that mice are in the house include droppings, chew marks, and nesting material. Good Housekeeping is an important part of eliminating mice. Keep the kitchen clean and make sure all food is put away after eating meals, including pet food, which mice do love. Clean under the stove, refrigerator and furniture- it’s surprising how crumbs seem to make their way into these areas. Make sure the garbage can always has a lid on it and take out all trash often. It’s also important to remove all clutter as mice find these areas great for hiding and nesting. Mice can spread diseases like Salmonella and Hantavirus. Finally, some fun facts about mice mice. Mice can play dead when they’re threatened by something, they communicate with each other through ultrasonic and unique mouse sounds and they communicate through facial expressions.
